About Our Book Clubs

Book Club

The St. Gregory School Library, through the generous, annual support of our CSPC, offers Junior and Intermediate Book Clubs as a co-curricular activity.

Junior and Intermediate students (Grades 4-8) are invited to join our before-school reading clubs. The Junior Book Club is for Gr. 4-6 children and the Intermediate Book Club is for Gr. 7 & 8 students. Members set personal reading goals and read independently during book club and personal time. Students share their opinions and feelings about selected literature during casual weekly "book talk" morning meetings with their peers.

Both book clubs usually run Wednesdays mornings, from mid/late January to mid-April, from 8:00 8:30 a.m. students are to arrive for 7:55 a.m. and meet outside of the library (Room 202).

An invitation to attend an information meeting and pick up a permission form is extended to all students in December/January. Listen to announcements for specific details! A reminder that space is limited and that spots may be filled on a first come basis. Forms must be returned to the library by the specified date.

About Our Book Programs

Book Club

This reading initiative has been extremely successful in promoting increased interest in & enjoyment of literature. Multiple copies of each fiction and non-fiction title are purchased in order for "book talks" and "shared reading" to occur amongst the students. After the completion of program, the school library will circulate the books so that individual students can access these nominated and award winning Canadian fiction & non-fiction titles for years to come. All students can sign out these selections during future book exchanges.

Please note that Primary students (K-3 students) participate in the OLA Blue Spruce Book Program through mini literacy lessons in the library.

Congratulations to the St. Gregory Community for their continued enthusiasm and commitment toward fostering literacy!

ola blue spruce book program

The Blue Spruce Reading Program for Grades K-2 began as a response to the popularity and exciting success of the Grade 4-6 Silver Birch program. The program has been sponsored by the Ontario School Library Association since its official inauguration in 2002, although some school districts in Ontario initiated the program in the late 1990s. The Blue Spruce program is now aimed at readers in grades K to 2, and the Silver Birch program is aimed at readers in grades 3 through 6.

The winner of the 2012 Blue Spruce Award was Giraffe and Bird, by Rebecca Bender.
